Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene

Consistent oral hygiene is vital to keep your smile healthy. For all residents in Hyattsville / Adelphi Maryland, we invite you to continue reading to learn more about oral hygiene, why it’s so important, and the negative effects that can come when oral hygiene is neglected.

Professional Cleanings

We recommend visiting the dentist bi-yearly for a professional cleaning and examination. Dental hygienists are in offices to perform deep cleanings for adult patients. At your cleaning, the hygienist will remove any built-up plaque or tartar that has accumulated on your teeth.

Plaque, if not removed daily, can build up and eventually cause serious tooth damage, cavities, and periodontal disease.

At your professional cleaning, the dentist will examine your teeth and inform you of any dental problems that may be occurring, as well as suggest treatment options. It is important to receive restorative treatment as soon as possible after a professional diagnosis. Leaving dental issues to fester will cause it to spread and potentially cause permanent damage.

At-Home Oral Hygiene

When children come into our office for dental care, we do all that we can to teach them how to properly perform excellent oral hygiene at home and understand why it is so important.

At-home oral hygiene is the most important way to keep your teeth healthy. Professional cleanings only occur once every 6 months, so it is important to keep your teeth clean and healthy every day through your own efforts.

Brush: We recommended brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each session, using a high-quality toothpaste that contains fluoride. While brushing, move in a circular motion, making sure to hit the gum line, and remove all plaque and food particles that may be stuck to the teeth.

Floss: We know that flossing might be avoided by many patients due to lack of time or just forgetfulness, but flossing is very important in maintaining a healthy smile. Flossing allows you to remove food that may be stuck in each space, preventing decay. Regular flossing can also help strengthen your gum tissue and improve your overall oral health.
